Visitors to Sedona hear the word “vortex” everywhere but don’t know how to choose. In addition, many companies, like us, offer additional “ceremonies” or other experiences on the red rocks. This can be confusing for first-time visitors. This guide offers a quick way to help you choose the best tour for you based on what you want out of your special day in Sedona.
The Three Types of Vortex Energy, in Plain Language
The vortexes of Sedona are said to possess unique energetic properties. While many people come from all over the world to experience the vortexes, many are skeptical of this claim. It doesn’t matter if you believe or don’t. It won’t affect your day, which will be spectacularly beautiful and a unique experience no matter what.
For those who are curious and want to know more about these energetic properties, they are often said to be divided into three categories: those with “Upflow” (Yang or Electric) energy, those with Inflow (Yin or Magnetic) energy, and those that are a signature combination.
- Upflow: associated with soaring to a higher perspective, and typically found on mesas and peaks.
- Inflow: associated with going inward, reflection, and healing, and typically found in canyons and valleys.
- Combination: both together.
Please note people use differing terminology to refer to the vortexes’ unique feel. When you visit one, you can add your own interpretation to the mix. We’ve heard it all over the years. Some of what we’ve heard about Upflow Vortexes: the energy is energizing, radiant, “kinda vibratey,” intense. About Inflow vortexes, we’ve heard from clients that they are: calming, centering, connecting, awakening to inner truth, and relaxing.

Practical questions before you book
Do I need a guide to visit a vortex?
No. The best-known sites are on public land, and you don’t need a guide to visit any vortex site. A guided day adds custom, off-the-beaten-path routes, the history and geology of the area, and the option of a ceremony, all without having to plan it yourself.
What time of day is best?
This depends on the time of year. In the summer months, especially July, August and the first part of September we recommend earlier in the day and in the evening to avoid the worst of the heat. In the winter months, especially December, January, and Feb we recommend the middle of the day to capture the warmth and sun of the day. In the spring and fall, any time of day is usually beautiful.
How strenuous are the tours?
Our tours are custom to your fitness and desires. We have a long list of trails and destinations we operate from; just tell our staff what you have in mind, and we likely can match it whether it is a 3-hour hike or a few yards.
Do I need to believe in vortexes to go on a tour?
Not at all. Our tours are as much about the red rock canyons, wildlife, geology and local history as they are about energy. Come for the views, and take whatever else the day offers.
Is this for individuals or groups?
Both. We work with individuals and small groups. We’ve serviced many corporate retreats in the past, but our usual clients are in small groups, or even solo.
Where do we meet, and do you offer pickup?
Our office is at 2880 Hopi Drive, Ste. B, Sedona, at the SpiritQuest Retreat Center. SpiritQuest is our sister company offering a stronger focus on multi-day healing, wellness, spiritual, and couples retreats. If you’d prefer a more comprehensive package, contact them. Otherwise, your guide will meet you there.
Do I need a Red Rock Pass for parking?
Parking at Sedona trailheads and recreation areas generally requires a Red Rock Pass.
What should I bring and wear?
This is highly dependent on the season. Because Sedona is an arid high desert, the temperatures can fluctuate wildly from season to season and day to night. In this regard, it is best to look up the expected temps for your adventure. Otherwise, wear sturdy shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen, and water.
Are your tours permitted?
Yes. We conduct activities on public land under permit with the Coconino National Forest.
I can’t decide which tour is right. What do I do?
